This week students will conduct summative research on a belief system to investigate the following essential question: "How have belief systems affected the development of societies over time?"
Helpful Links for this week:
Today you will take a look at a sample essay and will practice identifying key parts or elements of an effective essay. We will take a look at what you can identify as key elements and then take a look at your notes on religious conflict to see how you could construct an outline that includes these essential parts for developing a strong, compelling and effective essay to communicate what you learned through your brief research. Helpful Link for Today's Tasks:
Today's Tasks: Screenshot a section of your notes on religious conflict (the grey document). Add this to the Schoology discussion: HW: Create a 5-paragraph essay outline (outline only) for your religious conflict topic - Screenshot & upload to schoology by 9/25 @11pmHelpful Resources to guide your formative research throughout this document:
There is a document placed in your World History Drop folder titled "Formative Religious Conflict - Research Notes Template". You will use this document to help guide your investigation into conflict(s) that have occurred between two belief systems. You are encouraged to choose to focus on conflict that has occurred with the religion that you have already researched through group research. This will help you prepare for the summative as some of the notes and sources from this formative investigation may be used towards your summative research and essay. HW/Prep: Continue working on the research and note-taking portion of this document. It is important that you be prepared to participate as this is the last formative and opportunity for feedback prior to beginning the summative next week. We will continue working on this briefly during the next class. But the majority of next class time will be focusing on drawing conclusions and outlining for a 5-paragraph essay. You do NOT need to write an essay for this. We are simply practicing and thinking about how you would construct and organize an essay based on your research results/conclusion. This formative will not be recorded in Powerschool as a grade. Instead, you will partner with another student during next class time and give peer feedback to each other on your organization of notes and your organization of a 5-paragraph essay outline. It is important that you be prepared to participate as this is the last formative and opportunity for feedback prior to beginning the summative next week. SUMMATIVE INQUIRY and ESSAY begins Sept 26/27. All summative work for research notes, and summative explanatory essay is due no later than Friday, October 7th. Sept. 16 Friday/sept. 19 monday:You will begin today's class with a 5-minute check-in within a table group to discuss the 2 perspectives Venn Diagram you were asked to complete for homework/prep prior to arriving to today's class. Group Discussion (5 minutes): What did you find to be a true account of the Crusades? (historically accurate and non-biased) Please spend the first 5 minutes of class talking about what you discovered about the two different perspectives between Muslims and Christians during the Crusades and any evidence of historical facts about the Crusades from your brief glance at the documents --or from watching a video. Today's Independent Work: After the 5-minute discussion, you will then work independently on identifying historical bias in from historical text written during the Crusades. You will complete a Google Doc placed in your WH Drop Folder titled: "Recognizing Historical Bias: The Crusades" (you don't need to make a copy of this--it should already in your drop folder). You are expected to work on this For homework/Prep: You will continue working this document ("Recognizing Historical Bias...") outside of class for homework, if needed. sept. 14 wed/sept. 15 thurs:pToday, classes will finish up with Group presentations on major world religions and then take a short formative quiz on the major world religions.
After the quiz, students will begin examining text passages from The Crusades period of history and annotate the passage to highlight and make note of where they see religious bias in the historical text. We will practice annotating page 414 of the following PDF document (printed hard copy will be provided to you in class) For homework/Prep: You are asked to begin going through a list of resources (text and video) provided in the Historical Perspective & Bias: The Crusades Google Presentation and begin completing a Venn Diagram on the two different viewpoints during the Crusades. Bring your Venn Diagram to the next class meeting. Group Religion Poster - Gallery WalkYou will rotate with your group to other tables and provide constructive feedback to each other group's poster (4 other groups) using the 2 strands the poster will be evaluated on. You will fill out the slip of paper (Mrs. Stewart will provide this). Afterwards, you will take a look at the feedback groups gave to your group on the poster you collaborated on. Group Religion Presentations - group & individual feedback (formative)Groups will also present today their Religions presentation. Be sure one member from your group has submitted a shareable link to your group's religion presentation:
