May 8/9: Summative argument

5/8/2017

Today you will be working on your Summative Argument to respond to the following argument prompt:
Do the benefits of this change outweigh the costs for your culture?
Suggested framework or outline for your argument:

  • Historical context/background of the change within your culture (when in history this change occurred, what/who caused it, and what aspect of their culture changed as a result (language, way of life, belief, etc. -- give context of how this is different than how life was for them prior)
  • Compelling Claim: argument for the change to the culture being more positive--or negative in longterm impact and WHY
  • Evidence to support your argument (at least two pieces of specific historical evidence to support your claim)
  • Analysis/reasoning of how the evidence supports your claim
  • Counterclaim (counter argument --or opposing argument with evidence; then refute opposing argument to further strengthen your own argument)
  • Conclusion (thought-provoking)MLA citations (in-text references and a work cited page)

Note the following when drafting your argument:

  • You will need to consider the organization of your ideas and use quotes and/or paragraphing where appropriate.
  • You will NOT be provided an outline-- you must construct this argument yourself.
  • Consider using some of your existing writing (research findings and conclusion, “meanwhile in…” story of your endangered culture).

You will UPLOAD to Schoology at the end of class today.

HW: Work on "take action" plan (file will be dropped to your wh drop folder)

You will begin developing your plan for taking action to advocate for your endangered culture. This becomes the culminating work based on your research of this culture.  You will need to develop a plan for taking some kind of advocacy action. You will need to decide what you will advocate for and what method you will choose to advocate for your endangered culture. This requires you to develop an argument (80% of summative final exam grade) and develop an action plan and advocacy product (20% of summative final exam grade). After you develop a plan and carry out your plan of action and present the final advocacy product, you will be expected to reflect on your choice of action and method of action (you will do this on your final day of class during exam week).  Next class is when you begin your final work for this course for the year.  Congratulations--you've arrived at your final summative in World History!
