HW: Prep for your debate speech(es)!!!

Prep for your role in the summative debate.  Tips for preparation:
  • Focus on ensuring you have strong evidence to back up your argument (claim and reason(s) you are presenting and/or defending.
  • Know thy enemy!!! Anticipate what your opposing team will say and have prepared counterclaim statements, and evidence/analysis you can use against them in your debate.
  • Prepare a speech for up to 2 minutes (not the entire 3 minutes)--this gives you some cushion so that your speech doesn't go over, and allows you to be able to add to your speech to address anything that the opposing team may have said during their speech.
  • Print out your speech and/or talking points.
  • Rehearse. Know how long it takes you to deliver. Practice in front of someone (friend, family member) and practice with them sitting some distance from you. Have them give you feedback on your voice projection (do you speak loud enough?) and cadence (are you speaking too fast, too slow?)  Do you attempt to make eye contact with the audience?  Does reading from a script help or hinder your performance? Do you need a script or would you be better to use note cards with an outline of talking points?
