World History 9: Daily Agenda

August 22/23: STATE OF THE WORLD: Global issues

8/22/2017

Today's Driving Questions:
How did the past shape the world today?
What are global issues?

STATE OF THE WORLD
Today you will begin exploring various global issues and what they are about.

In small table groups, you will explore what a global issue is and make a list of possible global issues. We will use one example in class for discussion purposes and to provide historical context. Afterwards, you will be asked to think about a global issue you are most interested in researching for an upcoming formative assessment.

Helpful links to get your group started in thinking about and discussing "Global Issues"
  • This website's Current Events & Global Issues Page
  • United Nations Global Issues Page
  • Global Issues Network (GIN)
  • Model United Nations - Global Classrooms
  • GlobalIssues.org
Helpful resources for today include:
  • State of the World Presentation (Google Slides from class)
  • WH Inquiry Rubric (used for formative and summative assessments this year)
  • WH Formative Pre-assessment writing task: Global Issues Essay - instructions and rubric

HW: Pick a Global Issue to research; find 2 sources (print them out)

You will pick 1 issue you are very interested/concerned about that you feel the world must address. You will need to find 2 resources that help provide some background about the origins of this issue (where this issue started and/or when it became a "problem").

You will eventually need to answer the following question by writing an essay: Explain the causes/contributing factors (at least 2) of a modern global issue.
  1. Pick a global issue that you think needs the world to respond to & consider the following as you make your decision on a topic: Why did you choose it? Why is it important?
  2. Research your chosen global issue and find at least 2 sources/articles to address the prompt.
  3. PRINT these articles and bring them to the class on 25/28th August.
