HW: Watch Video in EdPuzzle. (11 min video.)
Be sure you are watching the video within EdPuzzle to get credit for completion.
In case the embedded video doesn't work for you, here is the Link.
Today's Driving Question:
How does the perspective influence
our understanding of history?
Task #1: Formative Assessment:
Close Reading and Primary Source Document Analysis
There is a Google Doc (dropped into your World History Drop Folder) for this. Follow the instructions within the document.
Refer to the rubric provided within the document (this is the same rubric you used at the start of the year for the India Partition assignment-- you will notice, the course is coming full circle back to the skills practiced and gained at the start of the year, only you will do this independently).
Do not remove this document from your World History Folder.
Task #2: Watch the video on Belgian Colonial Museum and 'Human Zoo'
If the embedded video isn't working from this site, try using this link.
Task #3: Post a 1-2 minute (or 1-2 paragraph) informal reflective journal entry in SeeSaw
Use the following quote from Ms. Adichie to guide your reflective response in SeeSaw:
- How does the perspective influence our understanding of history?
- Who should get to tell the story of colonization of Africa? Should some voices on the impact of European colonization on Africa matter more, matter less, or should we consider all voices/perspectives when studying this?
- How does/would an incomplete story or missing voice/perspective on European colonization of Africa affect how people view this ?
- If the story of European colonization of Africa remains incomplete --or-- perspectives not recorded or acknowledged on this issue, how might this change historical records?
Check-In:
Remember as Ms. Adichie stated in her TEDTalk:
"Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity."
Keep this in mind as we examine this through the context of Africa.
Individual Tasks:
Webquest - Imperialism of Africa.
Driving Questions for today's Webquest:
What impact did European Imperialism have on Africa?
What is the economic, social and political legacy left behind by the scars of Colonialism in Africa?
To what extent are the issues and challenges facing many African countries today a result of European colonialism and decolonization?
Task # 1. Watch the following Crash Course video (within EdPuzzle)
Task #2: Skim Brown University's Choices unit on Colonization of Africa. Answer the 5 questions in the Webquest Study Guide (dropped in your WH Google Folder)
Here is link to Choices Unit on Africa and Colonisation.
Skim through Brown University's Choices Unit on Colonization and Independence in Africa. This is just to build your background knowledge of life in Africa prior to, during and after colonization. Skim through for approximately 10 minutes to familiarize yourself with anything you do not already know about colonization in Africa-- use the 5 questions in the Webquest document to help you focus on what to read and pay attention to... |
You can use the sidebar on the left to navigate through the information. You are only being asked to look at the information in the "Introduction" Reading material section. There are a couple of very short videos-- you can choose to watch them if you want but you are not required.

Task #3: Watch this documentary on the tragedy of the Congo: King Leopold's Colonization of the Congo: (broken into 2 parts)
|
|
