Today, you will present within your group about what you have learned of the Roman Empire. You have 1 minute to demonstrate what you have learned through your specific task you selected within your group. Your group will have 15 minutes of class time to prepare and practice. After all presentations, you will spend 15 minutes summarizing in a Google Doc what you understand about the Roman Empire in a writing task called "So What, Big Deal!" You are asked to look back through your notes and then type a brief summary of what you understand about the significance (importance) of the Roman Empire. You will submit your writing and add an image file of your task (timeline, graph, overview of contributions, or social hierarchy) to your writing. First, before we begin today's Current Events topic, you will take a formative quiz on the Roman Empire (Exittix.com) For today's Current Events... We will be reading and discussing "failed and fragile states" since in this unit we are learning about the rise and fall of civilizations. Our focus today will be on looking at Syria. This week, you working within group to further research and learn about the significance of the Roman Empire and understand the rise and fall of this great civilization ("great" in terms of power, size, length of civilization, and important contributions). You will need to collaborate and work effectively as a team to accomplish all tasks. You will also need to delegate the work--assigning roles and responsibilities. You will present what you create to the class next Tuesday, Feb. 2nd. Good luck!

Thursday and Friday's Objectives:
Friday's Task: Read Chapter 8: "The Roman Republic" and complete the 2-column notes in your journal. This will be formatively assessed by Mrs. Stewart at the end of next week (we will take handwritten notes of Chapters 8 and 9). Use the suggested outline for your notes provided in the 2-Column Notes Template (linked below). For this task, notes must be taken in your journal--not digitally on laptop. If you don't know why I ask you to hand write your notes, please read the articles linked above. Reminder that G-SPICE digital notes are due by the beginning of class next Tuesday. Today, you will be introduced to our new unit on Creativity and Innovation: Contributions from Civilizations. The first civilization we will study will be the Roman Empire.

- We will be starting a new unit next week:Unit 3: Human Creativity & Innovation: Contributions from Civilizations -- from Ancient Times to Renaissance. A large part of our unit will be focused on the Middle Ages--not just European Middle Ages (A.K.A. "The Dark Ages") but civilizations (empires, dynasties, etc.) from other continents as well. Throughout these time periods there were many innovative ideas, inventions, events and advances in civilizations that changed the way people thought and lived. While some civilizations may not have ended, their contribution and legacy has lived on and influenced society after their fall or disappearance. To prepare for what we will learn over the course of the next unit, we will begin to look at some of the key and related concepts we will study in this unit and read news articles that relate to these concepts. If your group would like to continue working on this... that is a group decision to work on it over break (there is not any requirement to continue over break and no student group can force a group member to work on it--group members must volunteer to do so).
