We will take the formative quiz towards the end of next class as we finish up the lecture on CH. 5: Identity. Also, we will have our first Woodlands Walk-about Geography Fieldwork trip off campus later this week. Be sure to bring this signed permission slip back by next class so that you will be able to go off campus later this week. After today's Formative MCQ on Pop & Folk Culture, we will wrap up CH. 4 and begin CH. 5 on Identity. Chapter 5 will include examining gender, ethnicity, race, nationality and sexuality and how these various aspects of culture shape our own identity and sense of belonging or sense of "otherness" that we may separate others into labels and categories to further our own sense of who we are and who we are not. Chapter 4 (Fouberg) does a nice job of describing these aspects of identity. Be sure to read through this chapter. As you watch this TEDTalk, please consider some of the concepts we have covered in CH. 4 on Culture--and what we will cover in CH. 5 on Identity. 'My culture' Gallery walk...Today in class you will participate in a cultural gallery walk to take a look at your classmates' cultural identity and what cultures and aspects of culture they identify with. Pay attention to which elements represent folk culture and which elements represent pop culture? Which traits appear to be unique to them in this class and which ones are commonly found among your classmates? This can also help clue you into the different between folk and pop culture.
