Check-in: Practice Analysing the cultural landscape...

Picture

Practice making some observations about the images below using the following fieldwork study skills listed below: Observation, Speculation, Analysis, Evaluation.

Consider how the observing and analyzing the "Cultural Landscape" can help us understand cultural phenomena at the local scale.
Picture
Today we will be going off campus briefly within the Woodlands area to practice fieldwork of collecting data and understanding how a geographic concept can be applied at the local scale.

This will give you an idea of what you will need to do for the summative fieldwork "Neighborhood Geographer" project.

Introduction to Neighborhood Geographer -- analysis of the built environment

Today you will work with a team (approx. 3 team members) to look for local representation of the cultural concepts and terms from Unit 3.  We will do this much more in a scavenger hunt format.
Team Tasks:
  • Group Task (handout) while on Woodlands Walkabout
  • You will need to take a few photos of some of the terms and concepts and be prepared to explain how the image represents the term/concept.
  • You will make a list recording each time you find a representation of a term or concept (see list) within the neighborhood and an explanation/description of how this represents this term.

HW: Finish Language Study Guide… start taking Neighborhood Geographer photos

Before next class, be sure to finish reading "Languages" in Fouberg (& some in Rubenstein-- or watch the Rubenstein lecture videos provided on the Unit 3 webpage).
Finish the Languages Study Guide handout.

Next class will be a lecture on Languages.  We will cover this in only 1 block before moving on to the Religions chapter. Be sure to read ahead on languages so that you have a basic understanding of some of the concepts. You'll get more out of the lecture and class content if you come in familiar with the terms and case studies the chapter reading provides.

Also, think about which neighborhood in Singapore you want to focus on for your Neighborhood Geographer project. You can choose any neighborhood but all of your photos need to come from the same neighborhood.  You will need to have these photos ready to use next week in class (Nov. 13 for A blocks and Nov. 16 for B blocks)
