Aug. 22: Continents & Map Projections -- Perception & perspective vs. reality

8/21/2017

Today we will take a brief look at continents -- and engage in a mild manor debate (the "Great Continental Debate") about how many continents there REALLY are on Earth.
We will also take a look at various map projects to further our understanding of maps, their uses, limitations and the hows and whys of map projections and discuss how map distortion and perceptions about the world can alter our perspective of it.

Helpful Resources for today's class:
  • Great Continental Debate (Google Slides)
  • Map Projections PPT
  • Unit 1 Overview PPT – Part Two
  • 5 Themes of Geography (includes info on regions)

HW: Read CH. 1 Rubenstein + Quizlet Flashcards

HW: Read Rubenstein Chapter 1: Study Rubenstein CH. 1 Quizlet flashcards
While you may find there is some overlap between Chapter 1 of the Fouberg textbook and Chapter 1 of the Rubenstein textbook, its important to be familiar with both and begin taking notes for the vocab terms and concepts and adding multiple examples and case studies you can associate with the terms and concepts. This will help build a strong understanding of this unit.

Day 2: Unit 1, part 1: Geography terms & concepts

Helpful Resources for Today:
  • Unit 1, Part 1: Geography Terms and Concepts (Google Slides)
Today, we will begin to dive into Unit 1, Part 1: Geography Terms and Concepts.
You will take a formative quiz on the terms and concepts from Chapter 1 (Fouberg). You will also work in a group to complete a timed challenge to answer some questions based off of a ridiculously silly video (if you never forget this ridiculous cartoon song, goal accomplished for me).

HW: Intro to writing an frq: practice frq "School's out for summer"

  • Link to HW Practice FRQ -- posted in Schoology. Due at the beginning of class, Tuesday, August 22. Be sure it is handwritten and timed (25 minutes).

Day 1: Intro to Course & Review of Basic geography: Maps

8/16/2017

On our first day, we will go over what to expect for the AP Human Geography (APHG) course this year and take a quick look at each of the thematic units. After looking at the course syllabus and discussing what to expect for summatives (MCQs and FRQs), we will jump right into the course (yes, even on the first day). We will start with a quick review of maps-- why we create them, various ways we use them to inform us about the physical and human world, and why they are not all created equal --or even accurate.

You will receive your copy of the textbook, Human Geography (Fouberg) in today's class. You'll need it for your first HW assignment. Yes, there is homework after Day 1. Really. Sorry. #sorrynotsorry

Helpful resources for today's first class:
  • APHG Course Overview
  • Maps - Review (Google Slides)
  • Timezones - Review (Google Slides)

HW: Read Chapter 1 (Fouberg); Review Quizlet Flashcard set. Formative Quiz NExt Class.

Read through Chapter 1 (Fouberg). Review the vocab flashcard set in Quizlet. This assignment is posted in Schoology as well. Next class, there will be a formative quiz on Chapter 1. Be sure to keep up with the readings.
