After today's formative FRQ on development AND the formative Vocabulary Quiz...

We will continue to look at Industry and Services, shifting to emphasis on services.

We will look at some franchises to understand some of the decision-making behind WHY they choose to locate a business in a specific geographic location.

We will look at Hotelling's Model of Spatial Competition... and we will look at Central Place Theory to help understand WHY consumer businesses choose to locate where they do and why they have to be careful with where they choose to open a business based on range (how far away their customers will travel) and threshold (how many customers they need to be profitable).
Activity:
We will examine these theories and models by looking at Buffalo Wild Wings franchise and think about where we should hypothetically locate one in Singapore.  There is a document in your APHG Drop folder for this.

Today we will spend some time with a practice FRQ so that you can continue to hone your skills in writing an FRQ  --and-- practice scoring sample FRQ responses to help you understand what is necessary to earn all points on an FRQ and recognize responses that don't quite meet the expectation for full points.

Today's FRQ topic is on Call Centers. It will focus specifically on U.S. Call Centers. You will be provided some background information on this to help you be able to craft a response (again, today's is practice--not a formative).  Hopefully you also did the homework on Outsourcing so you also have that for some background context on call centers and many of the "back office" work that had shifted overseas to "offshore" locations. If you did the homework, you would have also read about why there is a shift away from some outsourcing to India and what this may mean for India.

There was an "Outsourcing to India - Case Study" Google Doc dropped in your APHG Drop folder. There are a few short videos to watch and pick one of the articles linked to read/skim through.  This assignment will take approx.  45min. - 1 hour (depending on how detailed of notes/responses you record). While this is in preparation for a practice FRQ --(no, not graded), this topic may be one of the SUMMATIVE FRQ topics your class will receive. You've been warned...
You also have a formative vocab quiz next class. If you've done the chapter readings and you study through the flashcard sets, you should be fine! Its just vocab.


The quiz will be in the form of: Matching, multiple choice, etc.   While there is a LONG list of vocabulary, you will be quizzed on approx. 25 of the vocabulary words from Industry and Services. Below is a list of possible vocab words you may be quizzed on. Be sure you have read the chapters to have a better understanding of the terms and use the Quizlet flashcard sets to study and test yourself on your own familiarity of the term and its meaning.
Be sure you have read the Chapter readings from Rubenstein (Chapters 11 and 12).

Today we are going focus on the role of women in the challenge to address development. We are going to look at how women and girls play a critical role in determining the rate at which a nation develops. We will also examine how microcredit loans (micro-financing) has played a critical role in many communities in providing women an opportunity to enter the formal economy and lift their family and communities out poverty and raise the standard of living.

Today we will start delving into the factors that impact a country's "development" and issues that often arise when countries are at different stages of development. We will begin to look at different models and theories about development to try to understand the complexity and challenges with getting more people around the world to higher stages of development and better living conditions.
